How to Clean & Care for Shaker Cabinets

by CNT Cabinet 30 Sep 2026

Shaker cabinets are easy to keep looking new — the flat, simple door has no ornate grooves to trap grime. But the finish still deserves the right care. This guide covers how to clean and care for shaker cabinets, what to avoid, and how to keep white and painted finishes bright for years.

Everyday Cleaning

The simple routine: wipe with a soft cloth dampened in warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. Wipe in the direction of the grain, then dry with a clean cloth. That's it — no special product needed for daily care.

Wipe up splatters and grease near the range and around handles as they happen; the longer grease sits, the harder it is to remove.

For Grease and Sticky Buildup

For tougher grease, mix a paste of baking soda and water, apply gently with a soft cloth, and wipe clean — no scrubbing. A 50/50 vinegar-and-water spray also cuts grease; test on a hidden spot first and always wipe dry afterward.

⚠️ Never use these on cabinets: abrasive scouring pads, magic-eraser sponges (they micro-abrade paint), ammonia or bleach-based cleaners, or anything with citrus solvents. They dull, streak, or strip the finish. Skip wax-based “restorers” too — they build up and yellow.

Keeping White Cabinets Bright

Painted white and pearl finishes can yellow over time from grease, sunlight, and smoke. To slow it: clean regularly, run your range hood while cooking, and keep direct sun off cabinets with a shade during peak hours. Warm off-whites like pearl and caramelo hide any warming far better than a bright white.

Caring for the Hardware

Wipe hinges and pulls with the same damp cloth. Every year or so, check and tighten the soft-close hinge screws — they can loosen with use. Our hinges are six-way adjustable, so you can realign a drifting door in seconds.

Protecting the Finish Long-Term

  • Use cabinet-door bumpers to soften closing (or rely on the soft-close, which does this for you).
  • Don't drape wet dish towels over doors — trapped moisture harms any finish over time.
  • Ventilate under the sink; fix leaks fast so the cabinet floor stays dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean shaker cabinets?

Wipe with a soft cloth, warm water, and a drop of mild dish soap, going with the grain, then dry. For grease, a baking-soda paste or diluted vinegar works.

What should you not use on cabinets?

Avoid abrasive pads, magic-eraser sponges, ammonia, bleach, and citrus solvents — they dull or strip the finish.

Why are my white cabinets yellowing?

Grease, sunlight, and smoke cause gradual yellowing. Clean regularly, use your range hood, and limit direct sun.

How do I fix a door that won't close evenly?

Our soft-close hinges are six-way adjustable — a screwdriver realigns a drifting door in seconds.
