What You'll Need

• A steel tape measure (not cloth)
• A pencil and paper, or your phone's notes
• A second person is helpful but not required

Step 1: Draw Your Kitchen

Sketch the shape of your kitchen from above — a rough birds-eye outline. Mark every wall, doorway, window, and where the appliances go. It doesn't need to be to scale; it's a map to write measurements onto.

Step 2: Measure Each Wall, Wall to Wall

Measure the full length of each wall, corner to corner, in inches. Then measure again at counter height — walls aren't always straight. Write down the smaller of the two numbers; cabinets need to fit the tightest point.

Step 3: Measure Ceiling Height

Floor to ceiling, in a few spots. This determines whether you use 30, 36, or 42-inch wall cabinets and whether a tall pantry will fit. If you want cabinets to the ceiling, we need this number.

Step 4: Mark Every Obstacle

On your sketch, note the exact position and size of:

• Windows (width, height, and distance from the corner and floor)
• Doorways and how the doors swing
• Electrical outlets, switches, and the electrical panel
• Plumbing stub-outs (sink and any water lines)
• Gas line, range/cooktop location, and vent/hood
• Radiators, ducts, soffits, or bulkheads

Step 5: Note Appliance Sizes

Write down the width of your refrigerator, range or cooktop, dishwasher, and any built-in appliances. Cabinets have to leave the right openings — a 30-inch range needs a 30-inch gap, plus clearance.
