Sink Base Cabinet Sizes: A Complete Guide

by CNT Cabinet 10 Aug 2026

The sink base is the one cabinet people get wrong most often — order it too small for your sink and nothing fits; too big and you waste a run. This guide covers sink base cabinet sizes, the simple rule for matching a sink to a base, and what makes a sink base different from a standard base cabinet.

Standard Sink Base Cabinet Sizes

A sink base is 34.5 inches tall and 24 inches deep — the same as any base cabinet — but comes in a limited set of widths built to hold a sink:

Width Best for
30 in. Standard single-bowl sink (most common)
33 in. Larger single-bowl or standard double-bowl
36 in. Large double-bowl sink, farmhouse sink
42 in. Oversized or offset double-bowl
The one rule to remember: your sink base should be at least 3 inches wider than your sink. A 30-inch sink needs a 33-inch base minimum; a 33-inch sink needs a 36-inch base. This leaves room for the cabinet frame and the sink's mounting rim.

What Makes a Sink Base Different?

A sink base looks like a regular base cabinet from the front, but inside it's built differently:

  • No shelf, open interior — to make room for the basin and the plumbing below.
  • False drawer fronts — the top "drawers" are dummy panels, because the sink bowl occupies that space. Many can be fitted with a tip-out tray for sponges.
  • Reinforced for weight — a full sink of water is heavy, so the cabinet floor and sides carry more load.

Farmhouse (Apron-Front) Sink Bases

A farmhouse sink needs a special apron-front sink base — the front of the cabinet is cut down so the sink's exposed apron sits proud of the cabinet face. If you're planning a farmhouse sink, tell us before you order; a standard sink base won't work.

How Our Sink Bases Are Built

Plywood box that resists water damage from the inevitable under-sink leak · solid wood face frame · soft-close doors. Plywood matters most here — particle board swells permanently the first time the sink drips. See our plywood vs. particle board guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size sink base do I need for a 30-inch sink?

A 33-inch sink base. The base should always be at least 3 inches wider than the sink.

How tall is a sink base cabinet?

34.5 inches, the same as a standard base cabinet — 36 inches finished with a countertop.

Why doesn't a sink base have drawers?

The sink bowl and plumbing occupy the top of the cabinet, so the drawer fronts are decorative false panels rather than working drawers.

Do I need a special cabinet for a farmhouse sink?

Yes — an apron-front sink base, cut down at the front to expose the sink's apron. A standard sink base will not fit a farmhouse sink.
